Cape Cod House Floor PlanCape Cod house floor plans originated in Colonial times. However, most people remember what is more accurately called the Cape Cod Revival house plans that came into being in the 1930s and have persisted in some form since that time. The tendency in moderns times is to call any home with a gabled roof a Cape Cod house. Cape Cod house plans can be distinguished by low exterior walls, steeply pitched gabled roofs and little or no external ornamentation. For a home to actually be a Cape Cod house, it would have been built somewhere between 1750 and 1850. A style of home commonly confused with the Cape Cod house floor plan is the Federal style house. Federal houses were built between 1780 and 1820. They are most usually one and a half stories with a gabled roof, so they do somewhat resemble a Cape Cod house. The features that will distinguish a Cape Cod house from a Federal style house are the larger windows, taller exterior walls and sidelight windows on the front door. Federal homes appear very formal next to the traditional Cape Cod home. Sometimes the Foursquare home is also confused with the Cape Cod house floor plan. Foursquare homes were built between the 1890s and 1930s. The distinguishing features of a home that follows the Foursquare style are a box-like facade, a front porch, hipped roofs and dormers. Bungalow homes also built in Maine during the same era were usually long and narrow with a low roof line, a hipped roof and hipped dormers. Other types of homes such as the Queen Anne and the Garrison had overlapping years of construction along side of the Cape Cod house floor plan and a certain features can be traced from style to another. If you are looking for an authentic Cape Cod house floor plan, it is important to keep the distinguishing characteristics of each style separated, otherwise you could end up with house floor plans other than your original intention.
